Why is Javascript terrible?

Name: Anonymous 2011-12-18 21:58

Not a troll thread - yeah, I know, what a surprise! I've done some quick googling and most of what I read was that Javascript was/is a horrible kludge and should have never existed. I haven't done any real work with the language, and regardless of what is said, I'll probably check it out. However, I wanted some opinions on it, such as what could have been improved in the language, any design flaws, what I should look out for (any brain-damaging 'gotchas') while learning, etc.

Thanks /progologologloglogloglogloglo

Javascript is a Scheme-like language with a C style syntax. This is its strength.

javascript is the most scheme-like scripting language in existence

everything from macros, tail-call optimization, block scoping, and the numerical tower is present

Lua is like JS but has half of those.

People say js is shit because they read JAVAscript, expect Java and get a non-verbose, non-bloated, dynamically typed, versatile prototype-oriented language instead.

Why don't you use it and see for yourself? Or does the extent of your programming knowledge consist of repeating the opinions of other people because you think it makes you sound smart?

Sometimes a language's flaws aren't apparent until some time (months or even years) after using it, and it requires comparable experience with a second or more languages!

I don't know why I'm even replying to you, but I'm not really defending Javascript. I don't hate it, but then again, I never really use it. I just think there's no point to this thread; >>1 should try it for himself, and if he likes it and/or thinks it makes him more productive, what does it matter what other people say about the pros or cons of a language?

What does it matter what anyone else here has to say? I doubt even 4 of the 5 people who post here are real programmers.

/prog/ is good

They can't be, because there are people here who actually think C++ is worth using.

Don't change these.
