WebOS rescued from death

Hell yes I would.

I always thought WebOS was pretty cool, but I really don't want to be locked in to a proprietary platform.

I think I'll go out and get a Pre.

When they release something open source, you know it's already dead. Look at Java - it's 100% dead legacy, that is being replaced with C#.

Use your brain cells:
Useful software:profitable, source code is valuable
Useless software:unprofitable, but they gain goodwill by releasing it open source

If Linux was closed source and in control of Microsoft, do you think they would release the source?

Redhat is a brand and they sell compilation, not source code.

There is no support without the source code. The source code and support go together.

article on Linux 3D
from 2008

I'm sure they've re-written it at least 4 times since then.

Not that 3D is useful for anything beyond spinning cubes on l00nix; so long as the 2D support is decent, who cares?

All they did was half-assed reverse of NVs driver, using proprietary IDA Pro disassembler.

When they're done getting enough data from the NV drivers, they'll start doing a replacement for IDA Pro disassembler.

Will they keep it in Shitkeeper?

Soon whole industry will move into trusted computing and disassemblers will become useless (you cant reverse encrypted firmware).

Sure you can, if it runs/functions properly, it can be reversed. Physics is physics is physics is math, which is expressable in computable models most of the time.

Not that hardware manufacturing industry is this homogenous body that moves all at once, especially when TC(Trusted Computing) has gotten so much bad press. I wouldn't even mind TC if the hardware's owner (PC user) had the option of controlling all the crypto keys, thus still retaining full control of his hardware and attaining the actual security that TC aimed to achieve. TC without such control would be just selfish DRM from manufacturers (who don't actually care about such things, despite what you might think), and more hidden hands that try to push them to commit such evils (content industry, among others).

tl;dr: Oh yes, you can reverse anything if you have the resources and time to do it. No, your doomsday is unlikely to happen since the industry cares more about profits from their buyers than they care about silly conspiracies.

Besides, pulling that off would require some very brilliant programmers, which is quite what the enterprise environment lacks!
