Because there isn't that much demand for J->E translation and Google works off statistical processes as >>5 explained. It's like a retarded baby learning a language.

Try something like ATLAS, Honyaku, and OCN. Those have a grammatical parser and use dictionary lookup. The VNTL community moved away from Google Translate a looooooooong time ago.

Google seems to have a lot of really advanced and convenient services, but the service is kind of flaky and shitty, and if you are doing anything serious, you would need to use something else.
