It may be valid perl code, but what does it do?  I don't understand.

smash your keyboard with your face if you want to create valid perl code

TBH I'm less concerned about making ``valid'' perl code and more concerned about making ``working'' perl code.

Perl is a language that gets shit done.

You need to answer yourself: what do you want to do with Perl?

You just want to learn Perl with no goal in mind of accomplishing any particular kind of task? That won't do it.

That seems to generate a chicken-and-egg problem since if I can't learn perl without having a ``serious problem'' that needs solving then I am far less likely to try to use perl when I do have a problem to solve.

People unclear on the concept.

Read “Modern Perl, The Book”

Consult perldoc, also perldoc.perl.org if you're unsure about something.

Don't be afraid of CPAN, and don't, don't avoid it for the sake of “reducing dependencies”.

Nobody said anything about a ``serious problem''. You should have goals. If you mindlessly wander around, when will you be satisfied?

perl is hard. Learn it bit by bit.

Don't change these.
