i like clojure but i also like being able to mess with javascript in the browser console... clojurescript seems to take that away, having to be compiled on the server, no?

Absolutely not. It allows you to connect to a running in browser application and develop it interactively with emacs (or just plain REPL). Even better than shitty js console, much better. Check out this demo: http://vimeo.com/29535884
