CSS, how does it work?

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-24 10:39

I suck at CSS and I dunno what to do. I know the syntax, selectors etc. and have no problem coming up with a design but I srsly cannot make it work. All I want is a basic two column layout with a top and bottom and can't figure this out for shit. Does anyone have a resource for actually learning this stuff well? I mean how to actually do an effective layout, not just "hurr durr, use property a to do whatever"

Use HTML5 instead.

Isn't HTML5 mostly HTML tags for media? How am I supposed to use it for layout?

The resources are all around you, because the markup is open source. Just view the source.

There are also lots of resources on the web for CSS column layouts, because it's a common problem. It's as if you don't know how to search the internet for information. There are also many CSS frameworks available, not that I suggest that you use them.

I also have a hard time believing that you have no problem coming up with a design, because if you also know the syntax, selectors etc. then you should be able to complete this task. http://www.thegridsystem.org/

I did search for info, but all I find is how to use selectors and shit, not why my layout doesn't work.
I don't just want to copy layouts I want to be able to understand them and write them on my own.
But I'm not sure why you've given me that link. The site seems more centered on Photoshop than CSS.

Knowing who you're replying to would help.

What the fuck, since when are CSS too complex to do manually?

Since forever.
Use SASS instead. With Coffeescript. And Dreamweaver.

I fondly remember creating my own homepage with Dreamweaver when I was 16. It had frames. And animated fire buttons. And black background.

That being said, it was shitty beyond believe. Stupid people shouldn't be able to shit up the web, and that's exactly what Dreamweaver makes possible.
