I have some dumb questions about Android as its hard to find straight answers about what exactly Android is. My understanding is that Android is the Dalvik version of the Java VM that runs on top of the Linux kernel and that not only do all apps have to run on this VM but the entire UI is Java.

So Id like to know how seperate the Dalvik VM is from the Linux kernel, like if you root an Android phone, does that mean you can compile directly to the Linux kernel?

Can Dalvik be ported to run on any OS?

Is Android completely open source or are their parts of Android that are kept closed to prevent Android being ported as a standalone OS?

How open is Android compared to other mobiles OS's like Debian ARM port, Maemo, Symbian? Im sure the Debian ARM port is completely open, so that would be the benchmark by which others are measured.

Why is there so much XML code in Android, do you think that is efficient?
