If you are serious about learning a language like this, I would recommend Matlab though. It's just plain popular (in academia and engineering from what I know) and there are lots of code that you can steal (ie. learn from) on the internet.
Thanks, yeah, I've had to use Matlab in the past due to useful things being written in it. It seems pretty powerful and popular, and it looks like complicated numerical algorithms can be expressed pretty easily.

Yeah, I barely knew programming when I was an undergrad. I was able to pick Matlab up and program and plot solutions for some type of wave function and Laplace's eqn. (I think) fairly easily.
