I know they modify it all the time but it is still old technology. GNU Linux is a more recent and very well varnished adversary to Microsoft's Windows series of OS'. The fact that Linux is open source means it has a lot better chance of being upgraded and polished all the time from the programmers around the world. In fact some of the programmers that work on it are probably in fact a lot more experienced than most Microsoft programmers. But one of Microsoft's top weapons is the fact that the Windows OS is well known and used by nearly the whole world. Because Windows is closed source people who have found exploits, glitches, and whatnot have to go to greater lengths to produce patches. Whereas Linux is open source therefore allowing easier bug fixes, and because it can be edited and fixed by everyone it means that it can develop faster. But also we can't forget that Microsoft has many, many programmers. I can easily deduce that The amount of people who work on improving Linux around the world is much greater than the amount of Microsoft programmers and possible 3rd party vendors that they use on the OS'. If Linux had just as much exposure as Microsoft I think that it would be indeed the prefered choice of operating system around the world.
