There are a number of quotation methods that have significant venerability, and choice betwixt them is merely a matter of taste. You'll just have to put up with people who have different preferences from yourself—it's part of life.
It's true that I haven't looked up the correct syntax (it's probably in a sticky in /vip/ or something) but using greater-thans suits me just fine, particularly since it's just as recognizable. If you want, I can start using full headers on my quotes, like:
