INB4 Read SICP
That is far too advanced for a beginner. Fuck, it turned me off, and I've been doing this for 7 years.

I just taught someone how to program and he wrote a fairly complex FIBONACCI BUTT SORT implementation in ANSI Turd. I also get the extra credit for having gay sex with him.

SICP is actually a very light intro to computer science

SICP too hard for a beginner?

When I started programming I was taught to love by the Sussman.  Now that was hard, and I enjoyed every inch of it.

Actually, SICP is the best advice for a beginner, and an excellent read for an EXPERT PROGRAMMER.
If you don't want SICP, go with HtDP.

Don't change these.
