I already have several books on hand that I own the cover how to program and how to use various programming languages. And that's cool.
What I'm looking for is a book that has good challenges in it for a developing programmer. Program challenges like sorting strings, doing math, using ports and memory, etc.
Can someone point me in some direction here?

The one book I won't recommend you is SICP. Never read SICP. It has nothing to do with your request.

Does SICP have questions/challenges for me to learn from? Or is it just a wall of text where I have to "infer" knowledge?

Honestly? The latter. Kus its like generalize it and u can learn something. IF YOU think you have to know all the math, u will learn nothing. Unless u=Roket Scientist. LOL?

I don't care about math, I care about learning how to program. I want to start programming right away, you know "hacker" style. Get a feel of the language and computer dynamics. Instead of just being some snob who practices theory all the time.
In my opinion, programming books should just be running references for syntax and function. That's all I'm really interested in right now.
What I want, however, are challenges to start waxing my skills with? Get my drift? That Euler website looks great, something for me to work on over the weekend.

>>18 Agreed. It's not a 1st run book. It's a "I'm bored gimme programming" type book. :)

>>18 Yes, SICP - "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" is definitely worth reading.
Many of the ideas are represented in Scheme and since you haven't actually specified which paradigm you're interested in I can't actually recommend a book that would be well suited for you; but SICP is a fairly good read regardless of which paradigm you're programming.
If you want challenges, then what's better than writing a program like a compiler or interpreter?, I don't think you'll benefit much by writing small programs to accomplish challenges.

Hey how did you just slow down time when I read your post?
That was a neat trick!
Do it again. !!! . :D

Writing an OS? Designing a Lisp-Machine architecture?
interesting point. I just wanted challenges so I could explore the syntax of a language (BASIC in my case). So once I master the syntax I can really understand what programs DO when I read them. And HOW they do it in that syntax.
Things like writing a simple game or making a demo that does certain things and what else.
This is why we don't use LSD when posting on /prog/.

>>23 Sure. The point I was trying to get at was that learning to write large programs (such as compilers and kernels) are generally a better learning experience for the developer than writing small programs which are written to accomplish project euler's challenges.

I suppose I'm better off after it! It was quite the experience. Being so high you don't think you're high??!!!???!??? :) :D It's odd. But I got upset at someone who never hurt me. So that makes me sad. :/ So be kind. That is my advice.

And it help old old people too. and other people enjoy it too! So if you DO NOT happen to enjoy it dont cramp our style, man! Dont ruin the party. EH? They should just legalize it WITHOUT TAX across the nation of the US. and then people could just have it! That would be nice of them! :) It would make the people happy.
