Computer Science People

Name: Anonymous 2011-02-17 7:32

Why is it that in today's world Computer Science in college or university seems to be the drain for socially awkward, ugly, or just plain crazy people?
The computer scientists of the early days look like charismatic supermodels (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKfKtXYLG78) compared to the crapule I sometimes see in my CS classes. In the west the enrollment of people in Computer Science has been decreasing since the 90's. Enrollment of women in computer science has been decreasing even worse.(http://www.cssu-bg.org/WomenInCS/Pictures/widening_gap.gif) and I think it's all related.

No thank you.

Also welcome to /prog/, the citadel of autism where the freaks and geeks are such weirdos that even average nutcase looks like a friendly gent in comparsion.

What was going on in '82? The Sussman?

Exactly. He is 64 now and will probably retire in 3 years.

It's called The Sussman effect.

To be fair, the main dude in this thing is pretty hot.  Speaking of hot computer scientists, did you ever see a photo of young Dijkstra?  Daaaaaaaang.

hi! does anyone know an 80s or 90s funny commercial/short documentary about two nerdy hackers who get an offer from some big corporation guys to make a program with specified criterias in a paper and they create the program smth like 2 minutes before the deadline by scanning the paper, and the image of paper gets read by a magic program that creates the program automatically by itself???

I saw it like 1 year ago but cant remember the vid title and cant find it.

It's an old movie, though they've uploaded scenes (including that one) on http://goatse.ru/ you should find it by clicking on "The Receiver"
Good memories, bro, good memories.

I'm doing Computer Science and I'd say there are quite a few attractive males in my year (me included, my mom and the people on the Internet say so).
Though while I expected them all to be socially awkward and autistic, I'm actually one of the few people without a clique. It's a little sad that I still don't have friends, even when surrounded by people who share my interests.

Still, /prog/ made me feel rather elitist about programming and related stuff, so I think it would negatively impact my ability to make friends. I don't think it would be a good thing if I were to rage at someone just because they said that Haskell being a lazy language means that you don't need to put in semicolons to terminate statements.

Of course not! It means you can optionally force your indentation.

Women are animals and should be kept in pens. There is also nothing wrong with trading womens on animal market, like cows or horses. Muslims do it right.
