Okay, enterprise /prog/rammers, I know you probably get this kind of thread a lot, but I just want to know what would be the best language to get into for making simple things.
Here's the thing -- I know that some people like to suggest what language would be best for a ``learning experience'' or some shit, and you want people to read SICP and stuff. But I have no interest in doing any advanced programming. I just want to be able to pick up a rather easy language (if there is such a thing) to make pretty simple programs (programs as in utilities and such, not video games). I never expect to advance from that, so please don't suggest stuff based on its usefulness in the long run. I don't anticipate that I will ever develop an interest in delving really deep into the realm of programming. While you are all off swimming in the deep end, I will probably never venture past the kiddie pool.
I'm not going to be getting into programming for much of anything except for fun and maybe to make a few tasks a little easier. And I'm not a CS major or something who is thinking about getting into programming for a career.
So, given that information, what would you suggest, prague? I've heard that Python is a good start, though I know some of you may disapprove because of FIOC. And I don't know anything else about it, so I'm not in any position to be able to determine whether it's good or bad.
Oh, and I use GNU/Linux and Windows, if that makes any difference.
Any serious replies will be greatly appreciated.
In before someone posts the ``learn how to program in 10 years'' shit. That's the exact opposite of what I'm interested in. I'm sure it's useful for people who want to become EXPERT PROGRAMMERS, but that isn't for me.
