What operating system and editor will make me a good programmer?  My professor keeps telling me that OSX is the way to go since it is based on Unix and that Linux isn't very good since GNU is not Unix.

As editor, I'd recommend you to take a look at Gedit (standard editor of GNOME), Kate (part of the KDE Project).
