Isn't it the reverse? They rarely get payed much for showing on TV (not based on ratings), and most of the profit is just from DVDs and merchandise. Some unpopular series are lucky to sell 1000 DVDs/volume (one volume being 2 episodes on average, a series being about 13-26 episodes on average, and a DVD costing ~40-50$) and very popular ones could go in 10000-30000+. That's like 300K$ for unpopular series in sales and maybe a few million for popular ones. Do you really think animation staff is payed that much?
