LINUS

The story goes something like this:

    Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux Kernel, was visiting his friend Andrew Tridgell, the creator of the Samba suite. They were walking through the Zoo in Canberra when, without warning, a huge flock of vampire attack penguins dove out of the sky and tried to carry Linus away. Fortunately, Andrew had an umbrella. Still, one of the birds was able to nip Linus' hand with its fanged beak. Rumor has it that on moonlit nights Linus still runs out into the darkness and jumps, stark naked, into icy water. Of course, he's Finnish and may always have done this. In any case, this is why the Penguin is the Linux Mascot.

Andrew says that the story has changed a bit since the actual event.

Mac OS X is built around a core of Mach, BSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, with a couple GNU utilities thrown in for good measure (but only a couple).  No Linux here.

You don't call FreeBSD "Free BSD GNU" just because it runs Bash and Emacs.

People often accidentally make the mistake of calling Linux this and Mac OS X that. They are not aware that the GNU system is there to protect their freedoms and that Linux or OS X provide only the POSIX compliant Kernels that allow the GNU system to run. You could remind yourselves of GNU by calling them the more appropriate GNU/Linux and GNU/Mac-OS-X, or as I prefer to call them GNU Plus Linux or GNU Plus OS Ten.

It's fine to use the name FreeBSD GNU but there is no need as GNU plays a minor overall role in the system. As for Linux, GNU will usually play a major role in the system and therefore deserves title space.
