dual monitors for programming

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 11:43

I know the main userbase for dual monitors are for graphics artists, but Im wondering how much of the programmer community uses dual monitors? I imagine that large hi-res wide-screens have solved a lot of problems with screen real estate for programmers, but Im curious what percentage of programmers use dual monitors in their work.

john carmack has like 1000 /thread

Having more than one is useful in general, not just for specific tasks. This is a topic for /g/, not for /prog/.

Code goes vertically, though (unless you write Java).

Most professional devs have at least two widescreen panels.
So one panel's for Netbeans and the other one for Internet Explorer 5, amirite?

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 12:51

I keep my code all over the floor, which gives me around 15 metres² of 「screen real estate.」

Who in the fuck would use 2 monitors for programming?

Unless you browse /vip/ and /prog/ at the same time, you dont need 2 monitors.

At every place I ever worked, I got two display panels. So, yeah.

Usually Eclipse and IE 7 nowadays. But yes, in my experience, the only people who get excited about multi-monitor programming are Java code monkeys, because they need it. A second monitor is not an advantage to anyone using real tools.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 16:23

I use a secondary monitor on which I often open documentation for perusal when I'm writing code on my main monitor. It's a convenient trick.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 16:34

so it's like just use an 80x24 terminal and set it always on top i mena jeez

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 16:41

I use dual monitors at work (programming). I'd go fucking nuts if I was limited to one monitor.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 18:45

I use a single monitor at work, but nearly every other developer at my workplace has two or more monitors. Typically a single screen will be dedicated to text editing.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 18:55

I have 4 monitors, though I rarely even make full use of 2 of them at any given time.

Feels like a waste of money and electricity, man.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 19:42

>>19
So... just turn them off.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 19:55

I actually use three monitors. I use one for coding and file management, another for electronic documentation and another for Internet/communications. After developing this workflow, I am never returning to anything less than 2 monitors.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-18 20:04

I use 4 monitors and two laptops on the same desktop and all of them are always used all the time. The main display for screen+emacs, and the other ones to rotate various pictures of Touhous for moral support.

i am an application developer using ruby on rails. I would have tickets and the website open on one screen and vim on the other screen.

Which begs the question to of why that most modern languages has the horrible misfeature of case sensitivity.

Not only does it prevents that you can put proper emphasis in your code, it also too shuts out the myriad potential programmers that which capitalization is something that happen to other people.

I, as a person of no colour, find your suggestion that only people of colour would find that slur offensive to be in itself offensive. Please consider that people of all backgrounds may reasonably find such statements offensive.

You only betray the fact that you are a 14 year old virgin with that ``slur''. No one who have experienced a black man's penis in his anus would consider ``niggerlover'' to be offensive. In terms more accessible to 14 year old virgins: it sounds about the same as ``icecreamlover'' or ``beerlover'' from someone who has not yet tried any of the substances mentioned and is too scared to try (and also is mortally afraid that no nigger would agree to love his ugly ass).
