Consider the fact that those quotes on vi are from 1984, when everyone thought that the mouse was going to be the replacement for any and all keyboard-driven UI.  And he was the guy who wrote it, so it stands to reason that he'd be one to point out what he doesn't like about it.

Too bad that "bitchin' editor" / "badass editor" never materialized.
