Frozensand?

I don't know if any of you are aware of the FPS called UrT (UrbanTerror). It's a fast-paced multiplayer game developed by a company called FrozenSand.

My question is: How do they work any revenue at all? The game itself holds no ads or anything. It's free to download and play. Their website is adfree also. Donations?

Maybe the development team is working on the project because they WANT TO and not because they are getting paid.

What, making money? For coding? Why would you want to do that? Do you also wonder how people "worked revenue" from all that drug use and sex in the seventies?

its a Quake 3 game modification

there are litterally thousands of mod teams who create games projects for free for fun

here is a website that lists mod projects:

What pisses me off about FrozenSand and Urban Terror is that they bundle a closed source mod with the GPL'd Quake 3-derived engine.  I argue that by distributing them as a single product, the whole thing is a derived work from Quake 3, but they claim that the game code is using the Quake 3 SDK license and therefore not subject to the GPL.  That would be fine if they distributed the two parts separately, and if you could still run it as a proper Quake 3 mod.

Their tactics reek of legal circumvention, and it's not as if they're losing money over it.  Dammit, Action Quake was open source.

Feh, whatever.  ID should have made the Quake 3 SDK license copyleft to make it clear.
