Greetings 4chan programming board. I was asking some basic programming questions on the G technology board which was apparently the wrong forum in which to place my inquiry. I was directed to come here for help.

Prior to asking my questions please allow me to give a bit of background. I am interested in purchasing a computer to learn programming since I doubt my celeron laptop is good enough to run a programming language. I have extensive background in computers, having taken several courses at school on computers so I have all the basics down and feel I am ready to advance.

Sooo on to my questions, in no particular order:

Should I purchase an Intel or AMD laptop? I've heard that AMD's open sources are better but I want expert advice before making the investment on a computer capable of programming.

(I know some of you may think I should learn Mac programming but PC is used in all business so sorry if you're a Mac guy but I've already made up my mind on this.)

Can I purchase a programming language from Microsoft (I didn't see one anywhere on Microsoft.com)

Do I need to know how to DOS to write programs?

How should I start writing a video game?

How do I get hired as a programmer?

And last, not really related to programming - I tried to overclock my old computer and it just makes beeps when I turn it on. How can I get my recovery CD to run. I know this might not be the place to ask but just in case someone knows the answer I'd appreciate the help!

Thank you in advance for all your help and I am very happy to be the newest member of the 4chan Programming Community!

You must first HAX MY ANUS. Then we will teach you all you need to know.

/g/ is the right place to ask this, so you should go back there. /prog/ is only about programming, it's not about what hardware to get or how to use software. You can program any kind of device with a CPU, which means that your computer is irrelevant, however some modern development environments can be taxing on resources. So a modern dev environment would just be your high-end PC, with lots of RAM and a multicore CPU capable of virtualization, however any computer whatsoever is capable of being programmed, so you should have no problem using whatever you already have.

If you posted or will post in this thread, then YHBT and will not be allowed to stay on /prog/ any further. Thank you.

Do I need a good graphics card too?

That's what they were saying on G also, I don't understand why everyone says that.

now THAT is a troll!

How rude! You are new here and the first thing you do (that's not making a shitty thread) is accuse others of trolling!

um hello he said to hack his anus that's trolling.
In regards to my thread, I apologize if you think my questions simpleminded but if I am wondering these things presumably others will as well. I was hoping for a bit of a better welcome here but I suppose you are all pretty nice, even if you don't help too much. I'm sorry if I offended anyone but you guys are way nicer than the people at the technology board. They posted some terrible pictures in my topic.

If you plan on doing any GPU-related programming. Why don't you actually buy a computer for the thing you actually plan to do? Do want to do gaming, or offload various computations to the GPU (video decoding/encoding, password cracking, others)? Then yes, you need a decent GPU. This question doesn't really belong here, it belongs on /g/. If your computer is good enough to run the software you want to make, it's likely good enough for you to be able to develop that software.

Well then perhaps you should get acquainted with some of our ``traditions'' and ``memes''. What you are doing in this thread is being a pompous asshole in more ways than one. And I'm not talking about this thread's contents, I'm talking about the form.

I will only write this once so read carefully. There is only one book you need to read. It is this book http://www-mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book.html . You will need a Scheme environment to successfully complete SICP. You can get MIT/GNU Scheme from here http://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/ . The MIT/GNU Scheme software should work adequately on your current computer. If you do decide your current computer is still not adequate, any computer younger than 6 years should also be fine; the differences between AMD and Intel does not matter for your level of understanding.

If you want to write computer games, you must first complete SICP. If you want to get a programming job, you must complete SICP three times.

Good luck, and happy SICP.

Hello new friend.

Welcome to /prog/, we dont like friends here, that is the reason why non of us have friends, in particular new ones.

I am sad to say that you, while you seem polite, intelligent and friendly, are a fucking troll.
I would suggest you to go back to the imageboards and stay there.

But if like getting your anus haxed, or suck cock of fat, sweaty, weaboo virgins then you may stay here and we will provide you with sex and drugs regularly.

Yours truly, VIPPER.
