SYSTEM V

/prog/rammers!

Why are the core of Linux so scared of declaring the SYSTEM V specification obsolete, and form an ABI base that's actually founded in modern architectures?!

It's like they are clenching to a poop they believe is golden. It's just not, so they are constantly smeared in feces

It's so tragic and ironic, because the UNIX-HATERS were right, and they were years ago. Linux could actually be good if they just cut the crap

Okay, wise guy. What do you suggest they use instead?

Something new. It's retarded, but alternatives are equally retarded, or excessively complex

It's not going to happen. GNU wouldn't like something that could be compiled on other than the end-system and distributed in binary form

Plan 9 is the future

This is not my area of expertise. Could you perhaps write a couple of lines about the limitations of the System V ABI, so that I can parrot them in causal conversations later to sound smart?

It isn't even all that bad when you take a look at what's out there. OP is just stirring up shit.

Like the rest of these guys, I don't understand which ABI system does supersede System V. System V works for our purposes and so, we'll use it.

You know ``supersede'' doesn't mean ``is better than'', right?

ELF itself (as implemented by Linux) has a few limitations:
* no support for multiple architectures1
* no support for signed binaries2

I use a certified UNIX operating system with both of these features.

__________
1actually, this was implemented by http://icculus.org/fatelf/ but the project was discontinued
2apparently was implemented by http://sourceforge.net/projects/signelf/

I don't see how the first can be considered important. The second is arguably a good idea which probably doesn't appeal that much to the powers that be.

please post the source annotated with your concernsmisunderstandingsetc

i actualy work on an interpreted OS userspace using the linux kernel, its just toy program for now.
but the idea in itself is interesting enough to try it.

interpreted OS userspace
a toy program

Using
/bin/bash
for init, are we?

Name: Anonymous 2010-08-02 5:13

no. i couldnt figure out how to write an init script yet. since we are already at this point, do you know how?

i have the sysV init src right here but it would help if you just told me how to initialize linux.

Are you for real? In case you are: you don't need to do anything special. You can run bash instead of init.

System V is far more than just an ABI. System V has evolved over the years, and the latest POSIX standards are only a couple of years old.
