People who program games for fun

Name: OPizzle 2010-07-14 3:25

Do you have a game engine that you use/are developing?

Did you get it from a book/uni/scratch/industry?

do you have a void.h you bring into your applications?

Also Windows/Linux/Xbox/BSD/Other/Mac?

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-14 5:11

You haven't been here very long, have you

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-14 7:29

Yes.

Built myself, although I sometimes look at the source code of other projects when something isn't quite working for me and implement superior solutions.

No.

Yes.

Its a secret, but i can tell you some details. The game name is "Velox Et Astrum", and its coming soon. Its a space sim/strategy with many innovative and paradigm-breaking mechanics.
There is a vibrant developer community around the project :

cheers for answering but the forth question surely cannot be answered by just 'yes', unless your games work on all platforms? then if so how do you intergrate the graphics/UI so it's not card/OS dependant? I do windows stuff and am bumming around with all that jazz..

Yes, developing one.  There's a major hang-up with the physics side but I'm doing a lot of pseudocode for other parts in the meantime.

I have a lot of ancillary code I'm referring to; but no, no void.h per se.

Windows primarily, eventually to be adjusted for Linux if need be.  Solaris, maybe.  Mac, no.

I like playing free software Linux games. I mostly do low hanging fruit bug fixes and usually publish my fixes to the public domain. I mimic the predominant style of the project. On my own projects, I just do GNU style. I target general Posix systems whenever possible, I don't really care if shit breaks for Windows.

You are the reason i won't be installing any Open Source apps without a burning need. When i see the words "makefile" or "tarball" i close the tab.

So hire a fucking professional to do the dirty work for you. I do this all time for the shit that I don't care to do myself. So far this year, I've invested close to US$14k in software development. Last year, I spent US$3k.

You know that "Velox et Astrum" is a noun and an adjective, right? It means "Swift and Star."  A noun meaning speed would be velocitas or celeritas.

Get out, thanks.

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-14 22:47

I used to write games for fun until this bastard that I collabed with fucked me over and make a commerical version.

I shouldn't be so pissed off because I wasn't doing it for money but it's just a shit to have someone steal your work like that.

You could make your version and distribute it for free(you have the source still?), so his business gets zero profits.
Name it something catchy and promote via open source sites, make couple of slashdot/reddit/digg posts, mention its free and much better than the commercial version.

FrozenVoid, "orbis" is a masculine noun. It should read "orbis terrarum delendus est."

I don't understand what you are saying. "Orbis" is masculine and is modified by the adjective "delendus." It has to be delendus since it's a masculine noun instead of delenda which it would be if your subject was Carthago instead of orbis terrarum.

I think also you should consider the comment about the title of your game. I don't think that velox is the word that you intend to use.

Why the fuck are you talking to FrozenShite

Name: FrozenVoid 2010-07-15 3:34

Don't worry i changed to a better sig.
>>25 Its exactly whats the game is about, "fleet of stars" like StarFleet but in latin(so its sounds way cooler).

I'm not a human, i'm an animal spirit trapped in a human body.
So it is perfectly reasonable to use 'it'.

I really don't understand what/who FrozenVoid is, but it all seems like faggotry to me..

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-15 9:14

The original FrozenVoid was just an autistic 12-year-old, who alternated between shitposting and flooding /prog/ with his broken markov-chain thread necro script. He threw a tantrum and left after MrVacbob deleted a bunch of his posts and hasn't been heard from since. Some time later, a bunch of idiots from the imageboards started using the name FrozenVoid, but they're not anywhere near as annoying as the original.

>Do you have a game engine that you use/are developing?
For my independent work, I am using a modified q3 engine for one project, and the C4 engine for another.
For my Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development, I am using GameBryo (The engine Fallout 3 used) which is in C++ and not to my liking. Alas, it's a good engine and I have to use it.

>Did you get it from a book/uni/scratch/industry?
q3 is GPL'ed, C4 the team have a license for it, which was pretty cheap and we get free updates. College pays for Gamebryo license.

>do you have a void.h you bring into your applications?
wat

>Also Windows/Linux/Xbox/BSD/Other/Mac?
Server-side for my q3 project is Win32/Linux compatible.
Client-side for my q3 project is only Win32 compatible.
C4 might just be Win32 compatible over-all. Not sure.
I believe Gamebryo is only Win32 compatible, but can easily be ported to Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, etc.

Hey, go "lol" some where else.  You aren't allowed to laugh in /prog/.
