What was Lisp using before it had garbage collection?
"Garbage collection routines, developed by then-MIT graduate student Daniel Edwards, made it practical to run Lisp on general-purpose computing systems, but efficiency was still a problem. This led to the creation of Lisp machines: dedicated hardware for running Lisp environments and programs. Advances in both computer hardware and compiler technology soon made Lisp machines obsolete, to the detriment of the Lisp market."

People would mostly just throw their bits into the street. This lead to increasingly frequent outbreaks of bit rot in Ye Olde England until Dr. Yun-So was finally able to show that all cases of bit rot in a district could be traced to a single memory leak.

It is likely they use patented Microsoft algorithms.

You obviously haven't read your SICP today.

"Programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute" - Abelson / Sussman

LISP code was never meant to execute except maybe as a novelty.

The writing and reading the perfect code such as fibs is the one true way to Satori.

Writing the code that can be actually executed to produce useful results is a false way which would lead you to and drown you in the profane routine and mundane vanity of the world. You'll start speak absurdities about performance, suitability to the so-called "real-world problems", would embarrassedly at first but more and more shamelessly use C++ and Python (or even Perl!), and so on.

Not releasing cons cells at all on the other hand is an invaluable technique that protects you from the lures of the world, akin to such methods as fasting, wearing rags, growing an unkempt neck-beard, using penitential chains, engaging in self-flagellation, following a strict plant-only or foot-jam-only diet, abstinence (in all means), prolonged meditations, and others.

(or even Perl!)
Why does everyone hate Perl?

I heard a lot from /prog/, but this is the top.
