The fence post paradox

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-24 13:39

Suppose you have regular C-array, like this:

int *array[] = {23, 7, 101};

Someone asks you which element is 23. Now the paradox is this: You may answer only 'zeroth' or 'first'. How do you respond?

>syntax error.

But disregarding that, I like zeroth.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-24 13:45

For c, it is the zeroth element. Also, lol.
But if you are implementing something for human use, you should translate this to 'first element'.

int *array[]
Guffaw

Anyway, it's o-'th as in goat without the g and the deliberate non-pronunciation of the t (as if you were a lazy teenage commoner), then th with no vocal resonance.

The element of index 0

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-24 14:02

None of the elements are 23. The only element (at index 0) is {23, 7, 101}.

I don't think you know C syntax as well as you think you do.

Get your "paradox" shit out of here.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-24 14:13

zeroth and first are both fine. oneth would be wrong, as that is the second.

Then what is the next element? Twooth?

zeroth     first
oneth      second
twoth      third
threeth    IHBT

If you want. Note: I do not endorse the use of numberth beyond 'zero' (and in rare cases 'one') and I generally prefer 'first' to 'zeroth'. In fact, if you say twoth or threeth, I will probably treat you like someone with special needs.

int *array[] = {23, 7, 101};
Someone asks you which element is 23.

I tell him there is not enough information to evaluate the problem since I do not know what the memory locations listed contain.

You can't, bro. It's a paradox, you only have two options.

Paradoxes are lies.  You always have more than two options.

A Yes/No question, huh?

I say the answer is No, then.

The answer is "GRUNNUR"
