Most show exactly that: there are the "smart" people who aren't at the top who feel they have to become atheist to become smarter,
Becoming an atheist won't make you more intelligent. Seeing inconsitencies/contradictions/impossibilities in various common religions, and realizing that even if the concept of god can exist, and you can construct unfalsifiable theories where a god, for certain definitions of god (this is a very loaded word) could exist, but even if a god existed, it would not change anything in one's daily life. The likelyhood for a christian god to exist is very low, as the definition given in the bible is contradictory, but that does not deny the possibility of a god in itself. These are just natural conclusions that one would reach by themselves after some thought. In the end, one would realize that there are a few choices, either become an atheist by affirming the non-existence of god, which might never be corrected, unless actual evidence appears, which is highly unlikely or become agnostic where you decide that the existence of god(s) is possible, but unprovable, so the whole concept could be ignored for now. The agnostic choice is a lot more rational, but some hardcore atheists diss it in favor of the scientific choice of affirming something is true, until proven false. There's also the possibility of avoiding all talk of religion because the definition of "god" is either inconsistent, unclear or otherwise nonsense.

I've had these thoughts, many years ago, long before I even had access to the internet. My parents actually happen to be religious.
