[HTML5] ULTIMATE QUOTING [WEB 3.0]

Name: Anonymous 2010-04-24 12:07

For years /prog/ has been undecided as to which QUOTING STANDARD would be the most appropriate.

Well, it turns out there's this ENTERPRISE HTML tag called <q>. Try it: <q>professional quoting</q>

So, how do our CHAMPION BROWSERS fare? Well, it turns out WebKit uses "mainly quotes", whereas Gecko uses “faggot quotes”. That was a surprise, I expected it'd be the other way around.

Internet Explorer 7 ignores it, as far as I know.
Internet Explorer 8 uses ‘single unicode quotes’.
Lynx gets it right.

Thankfully soon nobody will give a shit about IE7.

Why do we need a tag to write quotation marks?

HTML is bloated.

Why do we need a topic for ranting about a tag to write quotation marks?

/prog/ is bloated.

EXPERT WEB DEVELOPER

You wish. That shit never dies, and in fact IE6 is now a bigger worry with larger market share.

The only way to get rid of it would be creating an exploit that worked on XP and Vista which bricked the machines (as in erasing the BIOS EEPROM or similar).

Realistically speaking and if past versions are any indication, in 2013 or so you will be able to start thinking about dropping support for < 8, and it'll still cost you about 5% marketshare.

We all know IE6 and 7 are insecure. The solution is simple: embed an exploit which only those two are vulnerable to that upgrades to IE8.

That's a very good idea that has been considered many times in the past, but you'd need to detect Google or otherwise you site will get marked as a dangerous site (and ironically the newer browsers will show a warning). You'd also get sued to death.

But I'd sure love to do it. Not much loss either way: 99% chance these machines are already malware nests, it's not like they're going to be able to tell anything is different.

Now that I think about it, it might be feasible using some shady ad network (the kind that carries ads with exploits to install malware). I wonder how cheap they are. This also shifts the blame away from you.

tl;dr: I love talking to myself, thanks for listening.

no, the solution is to figure out a way to embed webkit or gecko in an activex control.

Google Chrome Frame considered insecure.

Or embed an exploit that forcibly installs Chrome/Firefox and disables IE.
