Android Programming

So, im thinking of getting a HTC phone running android purely because I'm not a blind iPhone loving scumbag and i like the idea of actually having the right to do whatever i like to my own hardware. Anyway..
.. Are there any people in here that could point me in the right direction so i can learn the most ideal language for the device and start writing my own personal applications for it before i get the device?

PS. im trying to avoid C/Java but if i have to learn it i will.

Almost all android apps are written in Java, so you might as well.
