micro payments

There exist many content providers who need to rely on shitty ads because 1)They're not big enough for subscriptions 2)Payment vendors have strict rules and do not accept their business 3)etc

Imagine this system:

Users have an account with a "pot".  They can top up the pot by making payments from whereever.  There is a maximum limit to amount in the pot to protect it from haxors etc.  The pot can be used to make micro-payments to participating websites.

Imaging your favorite site, but with a small section at the bottom.  This is a text entry box, with a 'suggested' payment already there, (but user can change this to minimum 0.5centUS (half a us cent) or maximum $1USD.  There's also a "challenge / response" box; there's short text string which user types into device (or which is passed to USB device) and the device returns a short text string, which user has to type into 'response' box.

This is a simple easy to use method to make tiny payments.  Very many people paying a few US cents per article read will rapidly make blogging do-able for some people.  The challenge/response device is to reduce fraud.

COST OF MONEY:
There is a cost.  Each payment will be protected by encryption.  there's cost of encryption (bandwidth, processor time, server hosting, etc) but that breaks down to be tiny amount.

So, people can make tiny payments, and content providers can get payments.  The people using the "pay now" system make a small weekly / monthly payment for the service, or a "per donation" payment.

DO IT /prog/, YOU WILL BE RICH BEYOND DREAMS.

Ad-supported sites seem simpler and a lot more accessible.

I don't understand this. Is it meant to be a secure way of making donations to sites you like? What's wrong with PayPal donations? Why does it need a separate USB dongle? Would this be enforced every time you visited, or only when you wanted to? If it's the latter, would anyone bother/remember to pay half a cent (because it's such an insignificant amount of money)?
