That's the idea. But the DSi can't do it. There's unforgivable lag on that DSiWare app and that's unacceptable for anything outside of shovelware. Plus, parallax barrier provides an actual stereo image which is what Nintendo thinks everybody wants because 2010 is the year of stereo graphics. Most people I've talked to prefer stereo 3D to head tracking. It's sad.

But you know, a real GPU (Tegra2) could probably take care of head tracking efficiently. You could get the best of both worlds, provided you don't rotate the screen.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-25 18:20

>>42
have you actually tried to do it on the DSi?

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-25 18:52

>>43
I'm not >>42 but you're dealing with a pretty standard 133MHz ARM CPU, good luck with that.

Note the lag: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LDMekXkA8Q

DSi mode hasn't been made accessible to homebrew yet, or I'd have been working on it myself (hoping to improve the speed.) But there is of course the fact that the game engine has to share the ARM9 processor with all that nonsense. I'm just not seeing it work out in any kind of action game.

OTOH, the 3DS is all but officially confirmed to be a Tegra2 (Cortex-A9 MPCore (dual core)), probably clocked at 800MHz judging from the language of the press release. The gap between one of these cores and the 133MHz ARM9 in the DSi is pretty huge.

>>45
the DSi can do it, as that video shows. sure, it wouldn't work too well for action games, but as you already pointed out, the 3DS shouldn't have any trouble with that.
there are ways to run small bits of code in DSi mode now, but people haven't figured out how to make use of the cameras yet.

tegra 250[1] with arm cortex-a9 mpcore[2] is better than even the wildest speculations about what the (still unannounced) psp2 might have.

Nintendo hasn't been about the most powerful tech for a while now so I'm very doubtful the 3DS will outdo the PSP2 in terms of power.

The only rumor I heard about the PSP2 is that it'll be graphically as good as the original Xbox.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 3:51

>>52
benchmarks of what, exactly? the speculations i've seen of what the psp2 might have vary from the same as current PSPs (222MHz MIPS chip) up to a single-core 1GHz ARM chip...

the tegra apx 2500 is as good as what's in the original xbox[1], and it only has a single-core 600MHz processor.

Megahertz myth, a 2ghz core2 is faster than pentium 4 with 4Ghz.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 4:25

>>56
You're comparing a dual-core 64-bit processor running at or below it's rated maximum clock speed and a single-core 32-bit processor overclocked a lot higher than it's rated maximum clock speed.
Between a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore at 1GHz and a single-core ARM11MP at 600MHz the difference is pretty obvious.
Try harder next time.

I still think the PSP2 will be more powerful graphically. That was one of the major advantages the PSP had over the DS so I doubt Sony will let Nintendo beat them at that.

I just hope they'll be easy to crack. Also anyone think there's a chance the PSP2 will be able to play PS2 games games just like the PSP can play PS1 games?

Probably not but I can hope... ;_;

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 4:35

>>58
sony already has let nintendo beat them at that by wasting time on the psp go while nintendo has been busy working on the 3DS, and by aiming for original xbox-level graphics while nintendo has been aiming a lot higher.

it'd probably need a 2.5-3GHz processor to play PS2 games at reasonable speed. either that, or the same processor as what's in the PS2.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 4:46

>>59
I'm pretty sure Sony has more than one team of engineers so I don't know what time was wasted on the PSPgo. Though the ones who made it probably could have spent their time in a better way.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 5:45

Hahahaha! Proprietary handheld consoles. You enjoy your faux-3D and Sony games while I play every good (read: pre-1997) game under the sun on my GP2X Wiz.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 6:05

You can play pre-1997 games on the PSP too...

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 6:29

I know, I have one, but it's much less hassle with open source hardware to run anything than it is to void your warranty by homebrew-ifying a proprietary system.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 9:07

>>46
The thing about the DSi is that it does not provide an acceptable solution. So it can do it in the very same way that it can run Crysis given enough flash to use as swap: clever software HMAs, and way too much lag.

>>53
If Sony wants to underpower their portable, who cares? If there's some rule that PSP has to beat DS in power, it falls apart the moment Sony fails to deliver on it. Nintendo's specs don't magically degrade when Sony's do.

Nintendo is keeping with the convention of roughly matching the power of their console from the previous generation. GB/C:NES, GBA:SNES, DS:N64. That leaves 3DS:GameCube -- which is just what devs are saying about it.

Who care about handheld gimmicky bullshit?

Project Natal is where it's at, just wait for E3, fags

The PSP was closer to the PS2 and not the PS1 graphically, I wonder where that leaves PSP2...

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 12:47

This fascinate you with portable feeling as if you carry PS2.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 14:01

>>65
75% of the games I care about are DS titles. Gimmicky? No one really cares about the DSi's enhancements, but the touch screen can only be called a gimmick because Sony hasn't copied it yet. (Honestly, I thought it was retarded before I picked up a DS for homebrew. Can't live without it now.)

Head tracking can be put to good use - I would love to do 3D modeling with head tracking and a touch screen (okay, it's a bit small, but damn.) This stereo 3D crap? (Stereo 3D makes the task of modeling worse, not better. Argh.) Well it's 2010 and it's what we get instead of flying cars. We've been gyp'd, and it's only profitable because of the types of people who still watch 4:3 broadcasts in 16:9 and call it HD. They think they want stereo 3D, and everyone knows that.

I'm inclined to agree about Project Natal. I don't really care yet, but some day I will.

I wonder where that leaves PSP2...

I'm inclined to agree about Project Natal. I don't really care yet, but some day I will.

Project Natal just seems stupid. Apparently Microsoft is having 2 press conferences at E3, one for Natal and a normal one. The only conference I consistently look forward to is Sony's since they actually announce some exclusive games (even if they're one or two years away).

I'll just keep hoping that Sony will make a PS2 emulator (which is highly doubtful since they haven't made one for the PS3 yet) for the PSP2 just like they did for the PS1 one the PSP.

I CAN DREAM, CAN'T I?

I meant that of all the waggle technology, I like the idea of Project Natal the most. And I don't care yet because I presume it still involves flailing around like a faggot. When they start reading sign language with it is when will be in a caring mood.

In the meantime, you can feel free to flail around like a faggot, grasping your wand with the bulbous protrusion at the end. C'mon man, you must have seen this one coming.

Anyway, PS2 emulation would be giant a pain in the dickwand as far as emulating on the PSP2 goes, unless it will feature another MIPS processor of the 64-bit variety this time. That goes against speculations of an ARMv6 architecture, but I wouldn't really be surprised if they did it.

Oh, I think the Sony Move is also awful and a clear ripoff of the Wii. But it's still better than Natal because it actually has buttons.

Although it would be pretty cool if I could cut a guy in half in Gears of War 3 with the chainsaw bayonet by controlling it with my dick in Natal.

*grabs dick*

Well that's just it. Waggle has proven itself to be deserving of the derogatory term. Nintendo-waggle has buttons too, you know, and it's still not great. Natal is doing something fundamentally different, which is why it has a hope--you don't need buttons if the system can comprehend fine gestures.

I fully expect Natal to pave the way for such a system. On the other hand, if NIA-type tech advances fast enough it may well eclipse the Natal stuff. I don't think we'll see either of these advance to the point of outmoding other control schemes without a serious change in the way input is processed. We're still writing software for it with programmed heuristics, when we should be writing software that comes up with its own heuristics. (NIA does this already, but not to the extent I imagine.)

I actually ordered a Pandora, way back. ;_;
I knew it would turn out like this, though. It's cool, as long as it gets here before Cortex-A9 netbooks do, and the nubs are good.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-26 23:25

Pandora would have been impressive in 2006. My phone that I got a year ago has more powerful hardware.

Oh shit dawg. That sucks. It would still have the actually-fits-in-your-pocket factor, but yeah, knowing it would come to this is why I didn't order one.

Equally powerful, more likely. And chances are it's a bitch to program for, unless it's a WinMo device, in which case your fancy hardware is useless.

it's an android device. so no, it's not a bitch to program for.
