The trick to learning JavaScript is to understand it's scheme roots. Which means that you should read SICP.

Ian,

My list of references online:
w3schools.com -> DOM, JS reference
ECMAScript standard
Mozilla's Javascript pages

If you're considering Javascript coding, just start writing code based on DOM and javascript basics .. and increase your vocabulary of objects and methods available as you go along.

In terms of buying a book, I haven't bought one yet. I kinda liken JS as a bad boy of programming languages and like it like that. JResig's book by manning is due anytime soon that talks about how to write your own JS based language or what have you - its fairly advanced in my opinion, and would be good to get a sense of applied JS in the field.

cheers,

tlvsg

I'll second Crockford's butterfly book. It's nice and concise, explaining the parts of JS that set it apart. I haven't read the fat O'Reilly JS reference book. I think the same author of that wrote the Ruby book, and that's quite good.

MDC pages are an okay reference to some of the weirder library stuff.

There no good "current" books on JS. Just google the parts you need.

Are you a GAY NIGGER?

If you answered "Yes" to all of the above questions, then GNAA (GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) might be exactly what you've been looking for!
