Today's question: Has the time finally come to start the merger of Unladen Swallow into CPython?

I'm +1. It's full of sepples and fatter than your momma, but Ladies Love Virtual Machines.

I guess so... They haven't really accomplished much except use a shitload more memory though. I suppose you could say merge it, activatable with a command-line option, and that will pave the way for lots of micro-optimizations, but even Google says that's optimistic.

The whole fucking thing needs to be scrapped, but no one wants to because there is so much goddamn C code interfaced with it that would be useless if it were rewritten.

FIOC? I vote against it.

On a related subject, is PyPy likely to deliver on its promises?

And what about Stackless and friends?

Besides US is for 2.6, and Guido is only interested on 3.x.

The only one that stands a chance is python on parrot, all the rest will remain shit.

The current PEP proposes merging into 3.x.

Stackless seems a lot like how the interpreter should have been designed in the first place, but the stuff it gives you, like microthreads, are way overrated. They aren't actually pre-emptive; they have to cooperate. So it all seems rather pointless and less efficient to keep in memory a pile of stacks, versus just writing a proper oo system that stores state in objects and propagates tick events.
