Some Flash Actionscript help

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-17 2:22

Bought some flash source files today from flashden.net that I need help configuring, (namely I want to make the XML menu work so that the top level flash files can have a link as well) I'd be willing to rapidshit them for some help.

Any takers? Spent $28 total.

I'll post the untouched zip file containing the source files since you'll probably need them to help me. I'll post the other two after I get enough help.

what is this actionscript you speak of?
is it another dialect of Lisp? or perhaps a descendant of C?

I'm sorry, I can't wrap my head around this.

There's this thing called neighborly support.

just a feeling

You could say it's both.
Scheme is a Lisp dialect.
Javascript was influenced by Scheme in its design (dynamic, first class procedures, closures, ...), but it misses many of Lisp's features since it's hard to retain those without a fully paranthethised notation. Javascript had a Java/C-like notation, and took some traits from Java as well. Java borrowed from C++ (which was bolted on top of C) and Smalltalk.
After that, Javascript was standardized into ECMAScript, from which ActionScript was derived. The first 2 ActionScript versions were more like Javascript/Scheme, but for the third one(latest), they brought it closer to Java for performance reasons, the user is almost always encouraged to specify the types (de-facto strong typing), even if he's still allowed to use untyped objects, they also removed eval in version 3 for performance reasons. The OO system is prototype based, which makes it a lot more flexible than Java's.

So in closing, you could say that it's a very far descendant of Smalltalk, C and Lisp, but not like web monkey know of this.

Just great, more Flash bullshit. Maybe you didn't get the memo: Flash sucks, stop using it. The only valid use it has right now is as a video player (and in that case you should also include <video> fallbacks).

That's nonsense. Flash is an excellent tool for interactive web media. Trying to design a whole websites in Flash vs using standard markup might be an argument, but there will always be an edge case. Similarly, one may be able to design a web-based video game in javascript, but why do that when Flash gives you so many more options and resources for that task?

There is no reason to flat out dismiss a tool. Even if its uses are limited, a tool has a use. With that baseless, trend-obsessed attitude, you're no better than a script kiddie.
