I went to go eat and WTF its still not done because it popped some shit up that i had to OK through FUCK YOU LINUX, THIS IS STRIKE 1.

Name: !UyDUsdVyxo 2010-01-12 19:09

it asked me not once but twice if i wanted to keep my current grub config.  Why the fuck would i change what i've been using for the last year.  Anyways, finally ready for a restart and hopefully I can start fucking with getting my 2nd mon working after that.

Name: !UyDUsdVyxo 2010-01-12 19:15

unsuprisingly shit has gone fucking bonkers after the restart.  I'm not even kidding, apparently i'm running in low graphics mode because suddenly linux can't recognize my NVIDIA graphics card drivers that it used before the update.  The best part is that as I type this the animated bar from the boot screen is somehow glitched onto the top of my screen in two places and its still animated, I SHIT YOU NOT.

Back to /g/ or /comp/ please.

Reminder that this thread will stay in /prog/ literally forever.

Ok, after attempting to install the latest and greatest drivers from nvidia.  Finding out I have to somehow kill X before I run the installer.  I DID THAT, then it tells me that my gcc version is different from the version that my kernel was compiled with, therefore it won't install.  LOL.

To top it off since I had no clue how to get back the graphics mode without using google, I restart... and now ubuntu doesn't even boot.

In conclusion LOL.

Ahh, I see that Linux has improved a lot in the last 10 years.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-12 20:07

You're doing it wrong: it's not meant to be used as a desktop.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-12 20:24

I never thought I'd see the day when I say this, but.... 1000 sagetank army please

I'm sorry, Anon. I knew I should have asked your permission to install Linux on my computer. I knew it.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-12 23:07

Why in the fuck are you compiling stuff?

Why didn't you just click System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers Manager and enable nVidia?

I got the driver directly from NVidia because at least the last time I used Ubuntu the automatically recommended driver is not the most recent one which caused issues with some programs that used OpenGL.  In any case it matters not since the driver simply refused to install.  The real issue is that Ubuntu's updater fucked up so bad that I'm going to have to format and reinstall.

I think that you don't know how to Linux.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-13 12:48

I remember one time I was trying to install some driver, I don't know which one.

There was a very strange error. I searched for it on Google.

On a discussion board, somebody asked about that problem. Another person replied:

"Oh yeah, that's normal. That's easy to fix: sudo mv /bin/bash /bin/bash-orig; sudo cp /bin/sh /bin/bash, then run the configuration script, finally run sudo mv /bin/bash-orig /bin/bash."

Albeit this worked (or maybe because it worked), I was so horrified that I decided to leave Linux aside for some time.

Maybe things have improved a little since then, but I wouldn't bet on it. The person who posted that solution made it sound like it was the most normal thing in the world - with that kind of mindset, I don't think we'll be able to have nice things.

Don't worry, that person was a dangerous lunatic.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-13 13:43

i installed ubuntu and pretend its vista -- it certainly acts like one.

wut
Isn't /bin/sh a link to /bin/bash on most linuxen?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-13 14:11

>>27
oh nose not on ubuntu. they use dash for its stricter posix compliance. however this breaks various legacy scripts which have a shebang of /bin/sh but actually rely on bash features (which bash would happily provide even when invoked as sh)

Why did you switch from Arch to Ubanto?  This makes no sense, at all.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-13 22:37

I'm typing this on Ubuntu right now! Unfortunately it's the shittiest operating system there is, except for all the other operating systems. So that's why I use it. You pretty much can't win these days.

Google for "all operating systems suck". While dated it's still very much on point. Such is my fate as a sysadmin...
