Best Free Anti-virus Software

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent freeware anti-virus software.

Been using Avast and was told there are better alternatives...

VirusTotal simply passes a file to a zillion AVs. Almost always some AV engine will flag a file as a virus, which makes the service quite useless due to those false positives.

Hey, some day I'll try to snd EICAR to VirusTotal. I'm quite sure I won't get a 100% ratio detection. OTOH, sure someone did it before me. I'm too lazy.
