Best Free Anti-virus Software

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent freeware anti-virus software.

Been using Avast and was told there are better alternatives...

It's impossible to make an AV which detects any kind of unknown threat. The best solution is to learn to reverse engineer code yourself and analyze most closed source code that you must run. Use a VM for the rest.
