Best Free Anti-virus Software

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-14 5:37

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent freeware anti-virus software.

Been using Avast and was told there are better alternatives...

This is definitely the wrong place to ask, they only thing you should get here is a formal proof that an infallible antivirus can't possibly be created.

However in the hopes you'll go away, I'll tell you there are basically 4 free AVs: Avira, Avast, AVG, and MSE. I haven't tested MSE, people say it's OK. The other three are all good, I ordered them from most to least effective which unfortunately it's the same order as most annoying (update popups) to least annoying (though all 3 can be configured not to display anything if you know what are you doing). All 3 score very well in comparatives, but as I said Avira usually takes the lead followed by Avast and then AVG. MSE is too new to be in comparatives. All 4 are more than enough for trash like USB stick virus, so don't sweat it too much.

tl;dr: go gack to /g/
