Why learn Lisp?

Name: Anonymous 2009-11-15 23:50

Python has readable syntax, a huge library, and bindings for what seems like every major in linux. Perl has CPAN. It seems with those languages if you want to do something all you have to do is import functionality from a library someone had written and use that. In lisp you'd have to “roll your own”.

Why should I keep on learning lisp when there are python and perl?

Looks like this thread is over. Thanks for playing.

In lisp you'd have to “roll your own”.
You underestimate the number of libraries that are publicly available and licensed in a nice license like BSD or public domain or LGPL.

I'm not going to go into the huge amount of features Lisp has and how easy it is to use it for both general purpose programming and implementing your own language features that you might want without much effort as there's many books and resources available about this.

The question "Why do *insert something you don't know yet*?" can't be answered without the one asking actually learning about that something. Since you don't know Lisp and just compare it with Perl or Python, you don't know what it has to offer, and you don't know what else a language could offer.
I don't really like quoting Graham, but you should look up his "Blub Paradox" to better understand this reasoning.

The modern study of set theory was initiated by Georg Cantor and Richard Dedekind in the 1870s. After the discovery of paradoxes in naive set theory, numerous axiom systems were proposed in the early twentieth century, of which the Zermelo–Fraenkel axioms, with the axiom of choice, are the best-known.

Don't change these.
