Let's be friendly to GIRLS

Name: Anonymous 2009-10-20 9:22

• Have a zero tolerance policy concerning online harrassment and enforce it.
• Don't allow sexist jokes. It's impossible for a woman to tell if you "really" mean it, and even if you don't it will be tedious and insulting for her to spend her time ignoring or humouring sexist jokes.
• Write all of your introductory material in such a way that a woman will recognise herself in it just as much as a man will. Use "she" to describe readers in various places, and use female names for some of your hypothetical examples when you have them.
• Unless your group has an explicitly sexual purpose, minimise the discussion of the sexual desires of participants. Many women (entirely justifiably) fear online harrassment in sexual contexts.
• Involve women in the creation and governance of your forum at every level.
• If there is an anti-feminist incident in your forum, apologise simply. Don't use phrasing that suggests that only women would have found the incident upsetting, or that you would have found the incident unproblematic if there weren't complaints. Don't tell women how they should feel about the incident: listen to them describe how they feel.
• Women are often placed in the role of "nanny" in forums. Don't leave the enforcement of social norms to the women members of the group.

TRIGGER WARNING This article or section, or pages it links to, contain information about sexual assault and/or violence against women which may be triggering to survivors.

In early 2005 a series of public posts were made to the Debian Women project mailing lists attacking members of the list on anti-feminist grounds, including violent imagery and repeatedly calling for the death of women's rights and the death of women's freedoms. By July 2005 the poster was also posting similar material to the LinuxChix lists. He reappeared on the LinuxChix lists around September 2007, and made more specific threats against LinuxChix posters and advocated sexual violence against and murder of specific individuals and similar things. As of mid-2008 he was occasionally still mailing violent rants and fantasies individually to active LinuxChix volunteers.

In 2008 several press articles mentioned that women were considering leaving Debian over repeated similar threats.

    * Nut launches death threats at Debian women - The Register, 3rd July 2008
    * Debian death threats? Come on, send us the emails - Valleywag, 3rd July 2008

The troll in question uses the alias 'MikeeUSA' and related names. He frequently makes use of sockpuppets and is a well-known troll of feminist and women's communities.
[edit] Example posts

    * June 2005 From: Mitch Obrian <mikeeusaaa@yahoo.com>;:

    "From this high vantage point it seems that whenever men make something great, after a time, worthless pro-women's rights females come to latch on to that creation and claim it as a triumph of womankind. These whores (an assumption, yes, though I doubt any of you were virgin wives, if wives at all) cannot allow man to stand alone in his technical abilities above females, females who are used to having everything handed to them due to their 'angelic' sex."

    * July 2005 From: Mitch Obrian <mikeeusaaa@yahoo.com>;:

    "a female who has feminist tendancies and beliefs should not be allowed to piss on the 1000+ men who make up debian." [Note that Daniel Stone/<daniels> quoted in the bug report is a man, probably counter-trolling]

    * June 2006 From: ntdw ntdw <notodw@yahoo.com>;

    "I pray you find your way into a feminist unfriendly country one day. God willing, you will die. Happily the feminist-unfriendly countries are immigrating to you. Remember the netherlands? Feminists die there."

TRIGGER WARNING This article or section, or pages it links to, contain information about sexual assault and/or violence against women which may be triggering to survivors.

In the context of MMORPGs (especially Halo 3), teabagging is a sexual assault performed on an avatar which has "died" in game.

    * Thoughts on: Tea bagging

    "Tea Bagging is the experience shared between two in-game avatars when one of them is at its most vulnerable state. As one man lies dying, the other man walks over the corpse and crouches repeatedly. This is an effort to simulate the sexual act of tea bagging and is meant to taunt or frustrate the receiving player."

    * How to teabag in Halo 3

    "It is easy to do and can provide a needed morale boost to you and your team, so read on to discover how to master the teabag."

    * Teabagging: the right and wrong way

    "You only do this for about 2-3 seconds, just so the enemy can see this in his screen, (because girls don't play this game let's be honest) and you run off to the next noob." Girls don't play this game? I wonder why not.

Preaching zero tolerance while demanding tolerance. "Waaah, I said zero tolerance FOR HARASSMENT!" There is, of course, a universal definition of harassment.

Women are apparently so sensitive (yet cannot see when men are joking), that jokes cannot be allowed and the problem is clearly not the women.

Women must have a position of power, but not a position where they must use it. Nannies are bad bad bad, even though that is a position of governance. Actually, this is the most contradictory thing in there.

Ignore them and go about your business. Feminism has long since stopped being about granting female rights, and has now expanded to actively oppressing anything that dares to oppose anything other than total female dominance. They cast themselves in the light of the victim every time, but nobody feels sorry for them and they should participate in active society just like normal women and men.
