lets have a thread in which you post books that have impacted you in a big way.
important books that you think every good /prog/rider should read.
/prog/ DOES read books, right?
just post the name, subject, and a little description if you like.
i'll start with a couple obvious ones:

SICP
-general computer science
-scheme

K&R
-C

This is something total different. I promise you will be impressed.

Hardcore Visual Basic
Made me think of programmers in terms of willingness to dig deep, not the languages they use. It's like something Michael Abrash would do.

...not that I'd ever use Visual Basic.

the fact that you think these books are outdated proves you have never read them.

I've read how to make a woman orgasm two times now and I feel it made me a bigger man and have contributed to my development as a human being overall because sex is just all too important in now-a-day society. Knowing how to pleasure your parter is a rare, under-spoken but celebrated skill deeming great rewards for both you and your partner.

The Foundations of Computer Science by Ullman & Aho, is a pretty good book, but /prog/riders should be familiar with the topics it covers already. Although, I never liked that it used Pascal for it's examples

Another book by those authors that might be worth recommending is the Dragon Book:
Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools

As for my own recommendations:
Common Lisp(and related) books:
-PAIP(Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming)
-Practical Common Lisp
-On Lisp

I follow the principle of reading only the books which are free, useful and available online. Since i don't have level of patience for Twilight-length novel, only a dozen kb of text is mostly the limit of "what i'm going to read",reading a part of a book instead of swallowing it as whole.

http://www.amazon.com/fear-ism-Ignorance-Atheism-Mat-Dickie/dp/0956160921/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_2
Product Description
At a point in time when every other person is an unblinking atheist, "A-fear-ism" offers the most cogent argument against the movement yet. Dispensing with philosophical jargon and pretentious posturing, religious educator Mat Dickie brings a refreshing dose of common sense to the debate. He exposes the ignorant assumptions made by the cynical mind, and reveals the arguments against religion to be anything but "rational". As the title of the book suggests, he considers atheism to be "the irrational fear of religion" - and leaves us in no doubt that we embrace such a negative world view to our detriment.
