Has anybody else noticed the incredible quality bump YouTube received recently for (at least) HD videos?

The "normal" quality you get doing nothing special is 854x480, H.264 at (a bit over) 1 megabaud. Then you have the HD mode, which server 1280x720 at 2.2 megabauds.

However there are caveats in usual FailTube fashion. 854 is not divisible by 16, not even by 8 - just by 2. Keeping 16:9 is cool and all, but goddamn, 854 is just a heinous number.

The fullscreen mode always uses 1280 x whatever as the hardware-blitted resolution for hardware acceleration. This is ideal for the HD video, which can go out without any software resizing, but the 480p video goes 854x480->1280x720->hardware, creating the rather striking irony of using more CPU power than the HD one. (The good thing about this is that you can switch to HD while in fullscreen mode and get all the quality)

Also, I just tested this HTML5 <video> bullshit that is all the fuzz lately and I became depressed (again). Theora's performance is the least of problems: fucking Firefox managed to deliver a "solution" which needs so much CPU power that it's useless in practice: if you dare do anything else than display the video at 100% zoom completely unobscured, you're already dead. Seriously, what is Firefail doing? Is the resizer written in C using floating point arithmetic calculating the sample position and weights for each pixel independently and then dividing by 4.0 and round-converting back to integer or something? Flash smokes it so much in performance it's not even funny. On a machine that can do 640x480->1280x720 software in Flash at a full 30fps, fucking <video> stalls with 640x480->720x540 and the *audio* starts stuttering. Pathetic. And just drawing the fucking controls over the video increases CPU usage a 33%. This is fucking ridiculous. In Flash you can cover the whole fucking video with a transparent image and it's barely noticeable.

That's really unfortunate because I hate plugins in general and Flash in particular, but c'mon. Less "freedom" faggotry and more assembly, motherfuckers.

(And yes, I tested with trunk builds too: little difference, since just 10% of the time is spent actually decoding the video, 90% of it is wasted getting it to the screen)
