2d game development

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-30 8:25

In school we started to learn how to write 2d games using the c++ libraries Allegro adn SDL. Now, I was wondering which library is more suited for writing 2d games? And are there not lots of other libraries out there, are any of those better?

I am basically asking what libraries is most suited for writing 2d games because I don't want to be thoought some lame method in school so that I will have to get used to another way later in my life because what I was thought wasn't good.
Now I will most certinaly have to learn more and perhaps something else later on anyway, but you might understand that I don't want to study something useless.

I have heard that the Direct X libraries work quite well, is this true?

Your English is horrible. Go get a book on grammar and read up, then try asking your question again.

Learn python, use pygame

Now, we don't need to argue over what languages that are best. C++ still is a language that works and if he wants to use it, let him.

And regarding the english, is it still not understandable? If it is, then I wouldn't call it horrible.

You will scare off the new-fags like that you know, but that might be what you wanted after all.

SDL is a good start, since it's plattform independent. For 2D games you could also look into PopCap's framework. It's free and all their games like Bejeweled, Zuma, Peggle, Plants vs. Zombies, etc. have been built using that.

/prog/'s growth needs to slow or we risk losing everything we love about it.

I assure you that >>3 is a newfag.
When I first came here nobody was a python supporter (or atleast if they were, they kept it as a deep dark shameful secret).

Think of it as a support group. Of course everyone were reserved in the start, but now we've all come out and admitted our problem to rounds of polite applause.

Or alternatively, /prog/ is just being tsundere.

Fuck right off. The most popular languages on /prog/, Sepples homework aside, have always been Haskell, C, and Python. We make FIOC jokes because we love.

If you have such a one track mind that you want to only learn one approach to graphical programming then you should probably stick to learning SDL or XNA(C#).

Game development is not dependent entirely on programming your graphics (it will seem like this in the beginning, but after a game longer than 4k+ lines of code, you'll see how trivial your library is to program for.

Furthermore your grammar is terrible, I suggest you choosing a different hobby.
