Question:
"how do I get the list of applications that automatically starts up when I login?"

Typical Ubuntu Answer:
"Click on here->here->and_here->session and find it out"

Holy crap, I was searching for xinit parameters!

No, OP is actually doing it right. Ubuntu users are quite technically immature, and tend toward stupid questions and stupid answers.

As GNU/Linux users we are used to find out ourselves answers by reading documentation, and ask for help only when it's necessary. However this is not basic-user-like, so that's what OP means for "Typical Ubuntu users".

...at least, this is my interpretation.

OK, here's how you do this.
First, you must launch a terminal. Double click the terminal icon on your desktop.
Then, type this:
sudo apt-get install appname
You may also copy and paste this. Confirm with enter.
Sudo gives your root privileges. It should prompt for your password. Type your password, then press enter (your password is not shown as you type it, so don't worry, nothing's wrong).
Never run commands with sudo you found on the internet before knowing what they do!!!
There, all done! Welcome to Ubuntu!

That's not funny; once I asked for a line to tweak my touchpad a little (seen it in the manpage a long time ago and didn't remember what was it called), and they gave me something like this. A word about sudo, how to use nano, etc, instead of the two words I needed.
