The Estimation Game

So how long do you figure it would take you to make a functional replacement for Shiichan, what tools would you use, and how many lines of code?

I'm thinking maybe two days and a thousand lines of code in Python with Django. It would only be slightly more work without Django, but the code would turn out a lot uglier.

A couple of months of procrastination + a weekend

Define "functional replacement." It could be anywhere from one day to a month.

Three minutes with Haskell.

it's funny because haskell is functional

Perl, and it would be a ridiculously long 1-liner

I typically agree, but this article strikes a chord with me. I read the first few sentences and though "Damn right, I could write it in a week too. I can see it now, CREATE TABLE question ...." Of course, then I read further down to see it predicting exactly what I was thinking and explaining why it was wrong. Regardless, I could still write SO in a week.

Ah, yes. We all forgot to count the time it would take to replicate the tremendous amounts of polish that so abounds in every corner of the world4ch experience.
So add five minutes. You can copy the CSS and HTML structure verbatim, no one cares about copyright here.

The difference 4chan version has more exposure and 5 year head start. Your little site obviously does not.
The point of shitty sites is they don't automatically fail, it survival depends on the community and administration.
4chan managed to stay somewhat stable over the years while its rivals did not. People like that stability.

REchan s0 totals approximately 700 lines of code and was written in around 12 hours. The earlier, single-board r3 is slightly over 500 and was written in a little less than 6 hours.
