CentOS is fucking lame. Nothing decent is available, and they strive to be so compatible with RH that they can't even fix a bug. If I wanted to use an OS that just changed the branding of something else, I'd use a Mac.
Install Gentoo. Optimize your CFLAGS. Compile your own kernel.

Gentoo is a bullshit. I've tried it once, and after wasting four days compiling the world, I eventually got a working system. Then I had the worst idea ever: upgrade the system. All my work went trashed. The following day a brand new Debian was installed.
