FYP

Name: Anonymous 2009-07-10 15:57

Currently going into 4th year in A comp sci degree, and i have the dreaded FYP ahead. I'm fucking STUMPED for ideas though.

The languages i'm comfortable in are C++, Ruby, Java, Php and c#(.net).

Any ideas as to what to make/do?

Also, how fashionable is Augmented Reality these days, and what would be some cool projects in it?

I'm sure a few /prog/riders are in the same boat, so you'd be helping out a few bros here

What makes you say so?

It doesn't matter how fashionable something is. Though you could make a program that takes a bitmap and recognizes objects in it. Then after that's good then try that with video (with a webcam). But that'd take quite a while.

You also might want to look at the Cell processor. You can download linux on the playstation 3 and write some programs on there. Use your imagination.

A compiler would be interesting (you'd learn alot too, probably). Not an operating system though (too much effort for little profit).

Wouldn't that be HARD AS FUCK though?

It is recognized that you're not the OP, and no one really gives a fuck if you are or not. Basically what I'm trying to say here is: read your SICP.

simple objects, like, say, SICP, which contrast heavily with their surface.

Make a text editor. That's classic.

That's not interesting, nor hard to make. Well, I suppose it would be hard to make something like emacs in the time you have.
And no, I don't use emacs.

Not interesting
Only if you're too dim to come up with a good interface.

hard to make
Coming up with the interface is the hard part.

OP here.
This sounds fairly easy, and interesting. I'll try this.

FYP may refer to:
    * Five Year Plan, referring to the punk band: F.Y.P
    * Foundation Year Program at the University of King's College
    * First Year Program at St. Lawrence University
    * Final Year Programme at all kinds of University in the Universe
    * Final Year Project at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu

Am I right?

Your not OP, I am!

Also, FYP is fourth year project. It's pretty standard for all the comp sci and equivalent degrees here in ireland.

I did this already, the program pushes the power supply switch upon running. So the program always ends.

Write a program that accepts arguments describing a 3-D geometric solid, two colours, and a light source, and outputs a bitmap containing a dithered representation of that solid.

MSDN, publicly available.
Other (mostly complete) documentation is available relating to the internals, but you don't need it to get a conforming implementation, however  you'll get a lot of apps breaking if you don't ( reason why WINE still doesn't have perfect compatiblity ).
