Programmer wants to make games.

Name: brosef 2009-07-10 13:32

I've been taking Computer Science classes for the past couple years so I can already program in Java. I want to tool around and make games for the rest of the summer, but I don't know where to start. What language/IDE/library should I use? I just want to make 2d platformy action games and such.

Hey I'm trying to write games too OP! Try PHP for dummies!

apparently /prog/ is confused. What i meant was first: what language should i use? I'm familiar with Java, but i also know a bit of C++ so that is an option, albeit a less desirable one. If i go with C++. what should I use? A game library like allegro, or just directX components or openGL? If i use java,i don't know of any libraries, so i would need suggestions.

You are actually confused. You must first complete this book. When you complete it, you'll be writing games and answering your own questions without having to bother us.

Java programmers tend to think in terms of IDEs, when they could just use cat instead of Eclipses, and NetBeans, or whatever Enterprise Bullshit they are using.

Why do you think /prog/ is confused? The first post answered your first question.

It saddens me to know that most people on/prog/ sincerely thinks this.

Using cat is a bit too much though.

cat is less bloated, and you can implement all the features you actually need but writing an IDE in Scheme.

notepad is less bloated, and you can implement all the features you actually need by writing an IDE in [spoilers]Assembly[/spoilers].

MS Word is less bloated, and you can implement all the features you actually need by writing an IDE in HTML.
