COOL FREE JAVASCRIPT 1.7 SUPPORT

I finally decided to learn JavaScript. I read `JavaScript: The Good Parts' and it seemed to be a bit outdated wrt the great new features JavaScript has gotten in the past few years, such as becoming a FIOC ripoff. When I started to experiment with those in my macfag browser (that seems to advertise itself as the best thing to happen to JavaScript since someone fooling people into believing that web browsers can be used for application delivery), none of those features seem to work (as in syntax error). I'm most probably doing something wrong, but is there a good THE reference for what the fuck is going on with this crap?

Also, should I use a library? If so, which one?

jQuery

Unless, that is- you avoid being a "hipster" to the point where you are willing to use a lower quality product with a broken implementation (literally, a lot of javascript libraries just plain don't work on something more than nothing), a confusing API and considerable performance issues. All so that you can tout how superior you are to everyone else, that you use some awesome emerging unknown library that anyone not in your cool developer loop knows about. That being said, stay away from jQuery UI like the plague, shit's horrible.

Why would would you use toolkit Libraries unless you write `enterprise-class' apps? I prefer to write my own, small libraries which
will be way faster then loading all of the cruft in Jquery/Dojo/Yui.
none of those features seem to work The only one which is worth using is destructuring assign.
