Wouldn't you need to write or use a BBcode interpretor first? I guess you could use what Xarn uses to be able to hide the name /prog/ on his blog.

You can do both, actually.

are there existing web frameworks for BBCODE? or do I need to write low level BBCODE with cgi stuff

Write your own BBCODE framework with CGI, it would probably end up being better than what's out there already.

Why bother writing it with CGI when you can just bootstrap it with an existing BBCODE framework, then when it's mature enough you can bootstrap it with itself.

Eh, you could do that as well. You have a lot of options with this.

I'd settle for a compiler written in an established language.
I mean, come on, Python does that (CPython).

What's the point of using something existing when it most likely won't even meet the basic requirements and would need a lot of hacking around to get started? Even then, when the requirements shift a little to the right, he'd have to update all that stuff again, and again...

guys I just found out BBCODE doesn't have if statements. how do I code without if statements? should I read SICP first?

Read up on lambda calculus except bbcode doesn't have lambda either oh noes

The Industry BBCode Standard as defined by the IEEE in IEEE Std. 9000.1 might not contain if-statements, but really, what is stopping you from deviating from the standard and implementing your own touring-complete BBCode implementation?
