Being an anonymous board, I don't have much data on the demographics of this board aside from the fact that there are both trolls and knowledegable people here. I've always been a programmer, having written my first program at age 10, and now I'm a junior in college. When you love what you do and are good at it, you are mostly alone because there aren't many people like yourself around you. At times you think, would it be better if I were stupid? Would I be happier?
I said fuck all that and kept at it myself. Today I talked with one of my professors and I am officially on board for research this summer that will result in publication, as well as a part time job as a programmer on the side.
You guys (except the trolls) are awesome. You badass fuckers made me always want to learn more and get to your level, and it's fucking paying off and it's awesome. Thank you, /prog/, for being awesome.
And to you young'ins that are still working on it - keep at it or fuck off.
At times you think, would it be better if I were stupid? Would I be happier?
I sometimes wonder that too, but I think it's because I overanalyse stuff to the point where life just seems completely pointless and not worth continuing with.
